When is Active Transport necessary?

I know what active transport is: it's the diffusion of molecules going from a low to high concentration instead of the natural high to low. I also know that it requires energy (ATP) to do its job. However, what I want to know is why is it necessary to be able to diffuse molecules against their concentration gradient? When is that necessary? Thanks :)
