Are most guys not romantic?

My boyfriend is very frugal with money. We have been dating just under 8 months and he takes me to dinner once in a while to inexpensive places. He is not a romantic type but is very dependable and responsible. I know he cares about me as he is very affectionate. I don't like dropping hints as I figure if he wanted to buy me flowers he would. He makes a pretty good salary and I would never ask him to spend money he does not have. I just wonder if this is the norm- when a guy is not romantic. I have not dated much.
