What kind of dog is good with kids, doesn't shed much, and is also a good guard dog?

I've had dogs before like german sheppard but found them very delicate like with hip problems and such. also, shedding will be an issue since it will be my kids first dog (puppy). would like to be able to protect them also, my german dog Blitz protected me from harm and was also very receptive to me when i wasn't feeling well. he would always stay by myside and just watch me.
